A historic building in the Texas Hill Country will soon undergo a massive transformation with the goal of becoming a public destination. By the end of it, the project should become a new place for residents to hang out and relax in downtown New Braunfels.

On Wednesday, November 16, the former New Braunfels Producers Co-Op and it’s nearly 2.5 acres is being repurposed into a multi-use development called Co-Op Marketplace, according to a news release. The Co-Op Marketplace is expected to open in fall 2024.

The property will have restaurants, bars, coffee shops, retail, open space, a stage for live music, and a splash pad, according to the release. The marketplace will fit into the current agricultural buildings, which includes transforming the 65 foot tall grain silo into the west entrance. A “pedestrian haven” will have over an acre of outdoor space that has a splash pad, 4,000 square-foot of artificial turf, seating, and shade

“This is a very exciting project to be involved with and it has evolved a lot along the way while still holding true to what my dad and his partners originally envisioned by bringing something unique to downtown New Braunfels that the community can enjoy,” said Krause’s Cafe and Biergarten Owner Chris Snider in the release.

His father, Ron Snider came up with the idea for Co-Op Marketplace before he passed away. Snider’s partners include attorney Mike Myers and real estate developer Fred Heimer, now with Carol and Chris Snider, who’s family helped with contributing with the growth of downtown New Braunfels. Mogas and Gonzalez Associated Architects, based in San Antonio, is going to help in the marketplace development, according to the release.

“Mogas and Gonzalez Associated Architects has worked closely with the owners’ vision to repurpose and recycle the existing and historically designated agrarian Co-Op structures to craft a campus of indoor and outdoor spaces that invite the city and its visitors to relax, dine, and celebrate right in the heart of Downtown New Braunfels,” said Mogas and Gonzalez Architects Principal Richard Mogas in the release.

The Co-Op Marketplace will have more than 25,000 square-feet of indoor space that will be used for retail and culinary tenants. It will also be a big-box store alternative for the area. The property will also have a medley of larger restaurants and retail stores that will focus on unique and high quality of artisanal, and regional food. It will also serve as a venue for the New Braunfels Farmers Market, according to the release.
